...especially if they are library books.  So after all that about The Time Traveler's Wife, I thought I might give it another try, and then I forgot entirely and picked up Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.  I really, really want to like it.  It's a very low-key novel with science fiction themes.  It's supposed to be atmospheric, page-turning, etc.  But I just can't get into it.  It's well-written, yeah--but it's so boring.

The movie is coming out next week.  I feel like maybe slow and moody would work as a movie--it's got Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, and I think it'll have some really pretty cinematography.  But I'll be back in the middle of nowhere for school, so I might not get to see it.

Wow.  Three posts in one day.  It must be time for school to start.  I'm pretty bored.

Anyone have any thoughts about Never Let Me Go?

I loved it. Which might mean that I'm not necessarily the best person for you to take book advice from, really. :)

Haha, any book advice is welcome, different tastes notwithstanding, no worries! What did you like about it? Does it pick up after the first 60 pages or so (that's as far as I've gotten)? Also, what are your thoughts on the upcoming movie?

I don't know that it changes substantially after the first 60 pages or so. I remember liking the writing; the slightly creepy feeling of something being very, very off under the seemingly placid surface of things; the believability of the characters; the low-key way in which the story was told; and the way it made me think a few mildly profound thoughts about life and death.

I have no thoughts at all on the movie, except that, while it might be good, it will surely have a very different feel to it than the book, because I doubt what the book does, atmospherically, will translate over exactly.

Hmmm. I think I'll give it another look. I have to return it in a couple days one way or the other, and it's not so long. Thanks!
