And now for a very boring update about archiving fic!  Whew!  Just finished cross-posting all my fic to the Teaspoon!  I hadn't posted over there in about a year, so I guess it was time for some housekeeping.  My archive there is the complete one, now (pending moderation)--even a couple older stories I didn't like enough to post over here are still up.

I have an AO3 account as well, but I only use it for reading right now.  Is it worth the work to cross-post there as well?  I'd have to move my whole archive....

The nice thing about AO3 is the import feature, so you can just post the links to your stories and it will upload them. I usually still do a bit of cleaning up on mine, since it doesn't recognize all my headers exactly, but it's a great help! Though it's been buggy importing from LJ recently - I've been importing from my Dreamwidth.

Ooh, I didn't realize you could do that. Does it get wonky with html things like italics and spacing? And do you still have to tag it and stuff? Thanks for the tip! And yeah, I have a Dreamwidth, too, if it's easier to import that way.

It's just that importing from LJ has been buggy for me, so I've been importing from the (exact same story) on Dreamwidth (since I crosspost). All you have to do is copy and paste the links and it will import the story text and headers, and it does its best to import the information from your personal headers into the appropriate fields, though sometimes it doesn't get it quite right. It's great with italics and I've rarely had it mess up the spacing. You can add tags according to what you want, and it makes it really easy to rate and classify it according to character/ship/fandom/genre.

Thanks for explaining that. Oh! Does it do that thing where it takes the header and puts it in at the beginning of your story? Because I wouldn't want my LJ header in addition to the header AO3 already puts up....

No, just the notes on your story. My fic headers sometimes end up in the text of my story and I copy/paste into the "Notes" box. No big. It tends to pull the title, author, characters, rating, and publication date, but it doesn't take it out of the story text, if that makes sense, but I just delete that bit.

So it reads your header, imports the info, and leaves the original header in your story text? And then you just delete the original header manually?

That's what it does with mine! I don't know if it would be different if you imported straight from Teaspoon (which I imagine you could also do). Want me to try it out?

Good to know! Thanks!

Oh, that's all right, I can sort it out later. Thanks for offering, though!

I had a couple of stories to upload anyway :) I prefer importing from Dreamwidth, because Teaspoon adds its own formatting and disclaimers, and I like the ones I've got.

AO3 imports just about everything. I do some minor tweaking, but with the new enhancements, I think it even pulls in your tags, although I'm not sure about that, since I haven't imported anything since the new stuff went live.

Like everyone else has been saying, the import feature is pretty awesome. I also really like the "Kudos" button, which is a nice way of getting feel-good feedback.

I have reuploaded very little of my back catalogue to AO3 because I am tres lazy, but I do post everything new there. I like to have a pan-fandom archive that isn't LJ. Teaspoon's great but I would like another place to put my BSG stuff besides here.

Yeah, I think I only have one (teeny tiny) fic that's not DW, so I haven't had much reason to move my fic to the AO3. But it seems to be becoming more popular, so....

*Squeals in delight!!*

*Dances manicly*

Oh, yes - so worth it! And the great thing is you can load it straight fro your LJ page! It'll do half the work for you.

*HUGS*

It is absolutely worth importing to AO3; I adore the download feature over there, which allows me to read fic in ebook formats on my phone (and e-reader, when I get one). I've got nearly two hundred stories over at AO3, which took a good while to upload as I did it before I could transfer all the details (I'm a tag wrangler volunteer at the Archive, so I've been there a good long while), but totally worth it. One of these days I'll make covers for my ebook fanfiction...
