[livejournal.com profile] rarewomen signups are live for eight more days! I have started working on my signup/letter, but I am still thinking about what to ask for. Also I got distracted by things I wanted to read. And then I got behind on some RL things. So. But anyway, who is doing it this year? And if you have not signed up yet, you should! Who doesn't want to trade 1k fics about awesome ladies? You just have to be able to request/write ladies from three fandoms in the tagset. So you should totally do it.

In other news, I started watching Elementary again, because my dad dragged me into it. I think I'm caught up to, like, episode 14 now? I wouldn't say I'm terribly fannish about it, but I do like it. Joan and Sherlock have an interesting relationship.

I am also 4 episodes into Young Justice and have the next disc from Netflix sitting in the devouring mess that is my desk.

I had another appointment with my neurologist about my migraines last week. That went...not terribly well. Which would be par for the course, hence I am seeing a new, different, hopefully more helpful and also nicer neurologist next month.

I always feel like posts should have conclusions and never know what they should be. Um. Yeah, I don't know. What have you guys been up to lately?

There are a lot of comics ladies in the tagset! And then there is also Young Justice, and Batman Beyond, and the Nolan movies. But busyness is understandable.

Thank you, I hope so too!

That would be cool, too! I remember the one you linked earlier, what other good ones have you read?

I have, but that was back when I hadn't read very much Batman, so I didn't really *get* it at the time. I think weirdly, at that point the non-Bruce Bat-person I knew the most about was probably Kate, because I had read Elegy, but I didn't get into DC seriously until shortly after I saw The Dark Knight Rises.

ETA: I found this on Tumblr. when I was looking for something else entirely. Have you seen it before?

I'm with you. Actually, gonna put up a new meme tomorrow: post the final sentence of your last 15 entries. I can't wait to see what brilliant literary gold I'm about to unearth...

That is so tempting. I'm just not sure I can commit to anything right now... I did write Magic School Bus fic recently, though! Tim-centric this time. I need to edit that...

I'm not terribly fannish about Elementary, either, but at the same time I'm enjoying it. I actually quite like Joan finding her feet with Sherlock and being a bit more spunky. It's fun. Nothing has made me go "OH WOW!" but at the same time I keep coming back...

Urgh I'm sorry to hear that your appointment didn't go well. Good luck with your new neurologist.

Ooh, that is exciting! I look forward to reading it! (The Magic School Bus is in the tagset, btw! And stories aren't due till April 28, if that helps. But being too busy is definitely understandable.)

Joan being spunky is definitely fun. I like that she will tell Sherlock when he is being a jerk, and he will at least listen to her, even if he doesn't necessarily stop.

Thank you!

Oooo so tempting... I did see that MSB was on the list and IT'S SO TEMPTING. I need to give this some more thought over the weekend.

If it helps you decide, you can see the signup summary here. That tells you how many offers and requests there are already by fandom, which helps you judge the likelihood of certain matches. (Although there's still a little less than a week to sign up, so it's not perfect.) But like, you can see that it's way easier to match someone on, say, Marvel Comics than Romeo x Juliet.

Gahh, I want to do the exchange, but I probably wouldn't be able to actually finish anything in a nearly sufficient amount of time :( But it is really, really tempting.

Yeah, Elementary isn't very fannish in terms of the format of the show? But Joan and Sherlock are basically my favorite BFF relationship currently airing right now, I think.

Ergh, was your old neurologist just not helpful in pinpointing why the migraines were happening?

Uhh, I'm off in the southwest of the US and went to Vegas for two days? I think that's about it in terms of news beyond the ever increasingly complicated issue of grad school

It's not due for a while--I think the deadline is April 28? But yeah, being too busy is understandable.

Hmm, the format of the show? What is a fannish show format vs. a non-fannish show format? But yeah, it is fun to see them hang out and be snarky and learn to be friends.

No, it wasn't that--it was just really frustrating to work with him because he was really pessimistic and hard to communicate with. Also one time when I was having problems with my medication I had to call his office three days in a row before I could get anyone to call me back.

Ooh, a vacation? Fun times! How is the grad school thing working out? Did you get that school to extend your deadline?

Date: 2013-02-22 02:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] giallarhorn.livejournal.com
Yeah, I feel like I might be able to make that? But stuff coming up and increase in duties and things I'd rather put off loom in the distance. Though, we'll see. I may do it.

Well, I suppose the crime procedural format with the larger lack of a focus on a romantic ship, since it seems like a lot of crime procedurals tend to draw a lot of fans more towards the principal ship itself in a lot of cases?

Ergh, bad office service and communication do not a good doctor make. Or physician, or anyone you want to see about your health, I suppose.

Yep- off to the desert for little over a week, haha. The grad school thing actually took up almost all of today to get sorted out, before I was finally able to negotiate out a new deadline at March 15 (right on the day of the original deadline, too). Which isn't ideal, but I suppose that if another school comes through with a better offer later, I'll deal with it then.

Sorry, what? I am confused.

It wasn't the people in the office's fault, just the doctor was not very good about returning messages. But yeah.

Hooray for desert vacations and getting things sorted! And yeah, March 15 is still really early, but at least that gives you a little more time.

Well, like the crime procedural type of show tends to be fairly episodic in its cases, and therein a lot of the draw for fandom in shows like that tends to be more in lieu of a romantic ship, a la Castle or NCIS or Sherlock. Or that's how it seems to me, at least.

Yeah, it gives me just enough time that if another school does come through a bit later, I can say that I tried my best to get an extension with them and just throw my hands up but seeing how two schools don't stop accepting applications till May and June well

Date: 2013-02-22 08:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com
Oh wow, May and June? Those are really late deadlines. Sometimes they will give you a decision even while they are still accepting applications, though, so maybe you will get lucky.

The sign-up isn't that hard--you just have to pick three or more fandoms to request and one or more lady from the tagset (it will try to autocomplete) for each. And then the same for requests. The optional details are where you talk about what you like about the characters and what you might want in a story, and things (like non-con or whatever) that you might dislike. And then if you have more to say, a lot of people write "Dear Writer" letters, like for Yuletide, which is where it's getting tricky for me. Just a lot to think about. If you need an AO3 account, I think the mods are trying to get some for people here, or you could try to get one through the AO3's waiting queue. When I did it I only had to wait a couple days, but that was several years ago. But yeah, if you're already doing one exchange, that might be a lot of hoops to jump through.

It is nice to see a show that emphasizes friendship and respect, isn't it? :)

Thanks. Hopefully my next appointment will go better.

Ooh, French? I always wanted to learn French. Are you taking a class or learning it on your own?

I still have to do my trope bingo card. And work on the WIP-o-Doom. I thought about it on my drive in this morning. Maybe tonight I will be able to focus and write some.

This weekend I actually have some free time without stuff hanging over my head! Woot!

Ugh, that sucks about the neurologist; I hope you have more progress with the new one :(

Oh, right, do you have any fun ideas for those? :)

Hooray for free time!

Thanks, I hope so too. :/

I kind of want to flesh out my ridiculous Eleven "Mpreg" story on the bottom row of my bingo card.

Your suggestion of the Doctor as Babbage with Ada Lovelace for the AU-historical square got me thinking about Three and Liz Shaw. And I had an idea for turning the slavefic thing on its ear with Peri and Six, but it was a pretty bare bones idea.

Here it is, not even 8pm, and I've got the WIP-o-Doom open and am staring at it, at any rate :)

Liz is the UNIT scientist one, right? That sounds cool!

Good luck with the WIP-o-Doom! Is it still in car-chase-land?

Yeah, she's the UNIT scientist.

Still in car chase land, yeah. Nearly out of it in current draft, but said draft may be subject to massive editing even of the 800 or so words I've managed.
