drive-through television update

I should have been asleep half an hour ago, so this has gotta be short, but I wanted to post quickly before I get offline.  I just watched the first episode of Game of Thrones!  I am oscillating between fascinated and horrified, which I suspect is the desired reaction?  Does anyone want to give me vague, non-spoilery guidance?  Like how much more disturbing does it get?  Or recs.  Recs would also be good, with spoiler warnings, if you have any favorites laying around.

How much more disturbing does it get? Without spoilers....um....it's not a happy series. But there are some great characters to go with the disturbing.

It gets less disturbing in that you get used to it and it starts to make more sense as plot and not just shock factor.

But it does keep up with the gore, and the excessive nudity.

The making more sense is good...I don't know that lots of gore and sex is something I want to get used to, though.

Okay, thanks. Yeah, I figured it wasn't going to be happy, haha.

You definitely will shudder, look away briefly but its so worth it. But its really not a happy show and sorry, I am not sure about the guidance ;)

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-06-28 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, thanks!

There's a lot of elements in there designed for shock, but the show does give gratuitous amounts of nudity and what they call 'sexposition'.

It doesn't get much worse past the first few episodes visually, unless I'm forgetting something. Unfortunately, it does change aspects of the story compared to the books.

Okay, thanks, that's helpful.

DO NOT READ THE THEORIES FOR THE REST OF THE BOOKS, IT WILL COLOR EVERYTHING YOU SEE.

Otherwise, the show does kind of stay within the same realms of shock value so if it bothered you, you may want to just read the books - which are so much better anyway.

Did you want fic recs?

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-06-28 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you mean, theories for the books? I'm confused.

Ahh, I don't have the time for a bajillion-page series! There are already more books on my list than I can read, haha.

Fic recs would be awesome, if they aren't too spoilery. :D

[identity profile] sacred-lullaby.livejournal.com 2012-06-28 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there are a lot of hints dropped throughout both the show and the books and if you know about them before you watch (like I did) you'll start seeing things that probably are not really there.

The books are SO worth it though. If you get time you definitely should read them... someday.

I have fic recs, but I'm not sure what is spoilery and isn't since you've only see one episode - right? Let me see what I've got.

Any ship/character preferences?

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-06-29 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I am not super fussy about spoilers, so it's probably fine. I like Daenerys and Arya and Bran and John Snow best so far.

[identity profile] sacred-lullaby.livejournal.com 2012-06-29 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'll try to post them this weekend.

(How do you feel about Jaime and Cersei? I have lots of Jaime bookmarked.)

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-06-29 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, thank you! :)

I am not really into Jaime and Cersei, at least not from what I've seen so far.

my two cents

[identity profile] amyhit.livejournal.com 2012-06-29 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been able to quite get past the abundance of really rapey sex, and, IDK, other things too that kind of play on that same attitude. It's definitely a well-made, well-written show, as far as I've seen (up to early S2), but "Violate or Harshly Use Every Person and Thing that Is Weaker Than You" seems to be kind of the MO of the entire ASOIAF universe, and it just puts me off.

It's not like the show supports these attitudes and behaviors, but they're so ubiquitous and explicitly portrayed that after a while I started feeling like I didn't know what the point of watching the story was, if not seeing assholes do nasty things to each other and to weaker people. Which doesn't appeal to me.

Yeah, the rapey sex really put me off, and just the ruthlessness, especially towards the women. :/

How did you end up doing with BSG (I remember you having some problems with that)? Because GoT reminds me a lot of BSG in its balance of general oppressive atmosphere, lots of people struggling at cross purposes, dark futility . . . and yet somehow there is always something or somebody you're wanting to root for.

But, yes, generally very disturbing.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get that far in BSG. I think I finished Season 2.5 or whatever and then gave up. It got really dark, I was confused by the "suddenly, a planet" plotline, and none of the characters/ships I was into were in happy places. Apparently it gets less confusing and I should have kept watching, but it kind of stopped being fun. :/
