So I FINALLY saw The Dark Knight Rises.

It's late and I'm sleepy, so I don't have much in the way of coherent thoughts...maybe I'll post again tomorrow if I think of anything else.   The short version of the story is that, short of the dubious science surrounding the nuclear explosion (Guys, you also have to worry about THE CLOUD--has no one heard of radiation poisoning?), I have all the happy feelings about this movie.  Well-acted, smart, and thoughtful, with lots of great supporting characters.  Anne Hathaway was fabulous as Selina/Catwoman.  I love that she got to be sexy and sassy, but that wasn't the full scope of her character--she was also brave, conflicted, classy, and she could pretty much kill you with her bare hands.  Michael Caine was great, as always.  And Joseph Gordon-Leavitt can be in every movie as far as I'm concerned.  I was really impressed with how he handled Blake, which was a more mature and less playful role than either Tom in (500) Days of Summer or Arthur in Inception, which are the characters I associate with him the most.  Plus, he's adorable.  There is no reason why we need a Robin (Nightwing?) sequel, but if he stars in one I will probably start hopping around my room with excitement.  I also really liked the who's-the-heir-to-Ra's al Ghul bait and switch.

Does anyone want to show me where the Batman fandom on LJ is hanging out?  Icons, fic, vids, meta, what have you.  I would especially like Selina-, Miranda-, or Blake-centric fic if it exists.  And if you posted in the past two weeks and want to link me, I would love to see your reaction posts.

OMG, THE CLOUD, RIGHT? Once I got over my initial flail at the end of the movie, I facepalmed like crazy. Maybe the winds were blowing from land out to sea so the fallout wouldn't be as terrible? IDK.

I actually liked Anne's Catwoman too. I feel like the opinion of her is incredibly split--either people loved it or hated it. JGL is pretty much perfection. I had a crush on Tommy from Third Rock at seven. So to see him actually doing awesome work is really cool.

I had a reaction post here, but be forewarned - it's the posting equivalent of a knee-jerk reaction and is pretty fangirl-flaily. I had a lot of Bane/Tom Hardy feelings, apparently.

I haven't... actually seen much of a fandom for TDKR. Even on AO3, the fic is coming in really slowly. Or slower than I thought, anyway. I expected the internet to explode with TDKR stuff, but no one seems to be all that interested. But finding fic that's not Blake/Bane can sometimes be a challenge. Especially since I also didn't really ship Selina/Bruce. :\ I've seen some good Blake-centric stuff, but I can't quite find it right now. I'll see if I can find it again!

I would almost forgive them for the whole radiation thing if there weren't that mushroom cloud. Like, IDK, maybe the water cooled it down so it didn't explode, or fusion is different from fission so it was less dangerous or whatever pseudoscience you want. But a mushroom cloud is a mushroom cloud and it means your city will be glowing in the dark for the foreseeable future. *facepalms with you*

Aww that's so cool that you remember him from when you were a kid!

Haha, mine was knee-jerk and flaily, so I will definitely check your post out. :D

That's how it was with Amazing Spider-Man, too. Like, it has a meme and a bit of a fandom, but everyone else is too caught up with The Avengers to get the other superhero balls properly rolling, it seems.

Thanks for looking! And people are shipping Blake/Bane? That seems a little...random, unless it's some kind of holdover from all the Arthur/Eames in the Inception fandom. I found and am reading this Blake and Selina fic that I think is gen (still in the middle, hard to tell how it'll end) and it is SO GOOD.

[identity profile] vestigialwords.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the mushroom cloud is where a lot of heavy handwaving/retconning kind of falls flat on its face.

LOL, I got back from the theater at like, 2am and punched that out. So it may or may not be comprehensible.

Yeah, it's definitely an Arthur/Eames holdover. I don't know where else that would have come from. I've read some where Bane is like... a dream Eames has, which was kind of cool in concept (I don't remember if the fic was that good, I wasn't in the mood for it then). But most of it is a bit... non/dub-con for my taste.

OOOO, Link? I've been looking for good Dark Knight Fic. I do love The Avengers, so it's hard for me to feel upset about the wealth of fic and stuff rolling in. But I am sad that it's overshadowing other things. Another contributing factor though may just be the overall mood of the Nolan-verse? I know that it was a tough place for me to get my head into when I was writing.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Haha it's nearly 2AM here so I am pretty much in the same state.

Here is the link!

I missed The Avengers because I didn't get back from school until the first week of June, so I have no feels related to it currently. Maybe when it comes out on DVD I will understand the excitement? And yeah, it could be the Nolan-verse, or for all I know, Batman in general. I've never paid enough attention to comics fandom to know for sure.

[identity profile] vestigialwords.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oo! Thanks! I'll read it tonight!

Yeah, I have no idea whether it's Nolan-verse or Batman altogether. I just know where my own difficulties were, and assume that I'm probably not the only one. My hunch though, is that there's not all that much room for fluffy fic in the Nolan-verse, and fluff tends to get churned out a lot easier than angst.

I found the Blake fic that I was thinking of: The Ghost In This House, about him putting on the Batsuit for the first time. There's not much going on plot-wise, but I just liked it as a collection of images, and I was able to hear JGL-as-Blake's voice in it, which is always a good thing.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's a good point.

Oooh! I will go read that, then. I found some nice stuff on AO3 last night, mainly this and this. They are both Blake-centric and pretty short.

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
Did Blake and Bane even talk to each other in the film? *is confused by fandom*

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom does so boggle the mind sometimes. :P

[identity profile] vestigialwords.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Not even a single word!

It's the Arthur/Eames shippers coming in and shipping Tom Hardy/JGL in any incarnation regardless of the sense (or lack thereof) it makes.

Yeah, IDK either.

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
IDGI, I mean I'd have thought the most interesting stories to tell would be the ones where the characters had actually met.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, indeed. Although, did Blake and Selina ever meet? I can't remember, and I feel like they could have some interesting interactions.

[identity profile] vestigialwords.livejournal.com 2012-08-04 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they did. One scene, I think. Two, I suppose, if you want to get ~technical, when he arrested her at the airport.

I really liked the end of that scene because even though all they did was give each other attitude, you could tell they both were really worried about Bruce. :)

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-04 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay, you're right, I do remember that now. :)

[identity profile] heureviolet.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
I really really wish they would option a Robin movie, although I feel like John Blake was supposed to be Tim Drake with how his origin story went (plus the similar-sounding names).

I have no idea about the Batman community, though, sorry :(

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
That would be fun...unless he died at the end, like Tim Drake. :/

[identity profile] heureviolet.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
...on the other hand, THIS EXISTS:

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
That is amazing. It's fanart, right?

I was thinking Nightwing might be a better way to go than straight-up Robin. Red and Green and tights is a little too flashy for the Nolan films. :P

[identity profile] heureviolet.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
SADLY.

Nightwing would not be bad at all. IDK THOUGH, I loved Nightwing's Robin!years. They could do like a trilogy, right?

Okay, wishful thinking. BUT STILL. DC totally needs to step up their movie franchise; all they really had was the Chris Nolan Batman movies and those are over and done with now. Man of Steel does not look super promising so far either :(

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Nightwing would totally be better than another Superman movie. But then, I never really care about Superman. If they made a Catwoman movie, that would also be fun. Or Batwoman. I am partial to the new Batwoman, to the extent that I read comics (which I do pretty rarely).

[identity profile] heureviolet.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, were you the one I was having a Batman vs. Superman conversation with before? I have way too many superhero conversations these days; I can no longer remember...

Dude, Batwoman would be AWESOME. I would love a Babs/Oracle movie, but I doubt they'll ever go there since she's still a supporting character in the DCU. I think Wonder Woman might be a possibility, though... (Catwoman would also definitely be neat).

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was me. I think Batman is way cooler than Superman, though, for what it's worth. :P

Ooh, Oracle! I never read any Birds of Prey, but everything I've heard about her is fantastic. :D

[identity profile] heureviolet.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually sort of meh on both; Batman is way too ~serious~ and Superman is too much of a boy scout! I like WW, Hawkwoman, and The Flash infinitely more, I think...

She's my favourite gal from the DCU, pretty much :)

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
Do you like Marvel Comics at all? The only Marvel hero I particularly care about is Spider-Man, but I am very fond of him as he was my first superhero. :D

[identity profile] heureviolet.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
I do! Spider-man is my favourite Marvel hero, but I've been a X-Men fan since way back, and the Avengers have definitely captured my imagination of late~ ♥ Did you watch TASM with Andrew Garfield?

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
I did! It was adorable! Uh, I may, uh, be working on TASM fanfiction, because I'm that kind of a dork. :P

[identity profile] heureviolet.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yaaay, you'll post it, right? ♥___♥

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
If I ever finish it! I've been posting as I go because it's a meme fill, but I think I've gotten it out of order and I have to figure out how to fix it....

Also, I had a brain fart earlier, Jason Todd was the Robin who died, wasn't he? Not Tim Drake. >_

[identity profile] heureviolet.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was Jaston Todd - he got "killed" by the Joker, then decided to go on a bit of a rampage as Red Hood and basically bite Batman's head off for not taking revenge...

I thought for a second you meant that Tim Drake had died too and was like OMG SPOILERS at first (because I don't think I got that far), ha ha... I'm glad you meant Jason Todd instead, though.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, accidental fake spoilers. :P

[identity profile] arliddian.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Joseph Gordon-Leavitt can be in every movie as far as I'm concerned --> this. Always this!!

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, appropriate icon is appropriate. :)

[identity profile] sacred-lullaby.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Me personally, I like comicunity because it covers all the different universes and publishers, and dcu_freefforall, but for bat-specific there's:

batcat_fic
ctb_ftw,
darkknightfic
gothamicons
nolanverse

And probably a bunch more that I don't even know about.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I will check those out. :)

[identity profile] sacred-lullaby.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
And I jsut realized that second one is a House comm. Disregard. :D

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Looool, thanks for the heads-up. :P

I had some thoughts over here :) It has spoilers for the Amazing Spider Man though, if you haven't already seen that, but the Dark Knight stuff is first and you could stop before Spidey.

Guys, you also have to worry about THE CLOUD--has no one heard of radiation poisoning? YES. Ha, this was my 'uh, what?' moment after the film. I went to see it with a couple of engineers and physicists, so we then had a discussion about exactly what type of bomb this could be, all 'fusion what?' and 'radiation!' and it was such a fun discussion that I forgave the film lol.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, cool, I'll take a look. I have seen Spider-Man, so that's just fine. :)

Hahaha that sounds like an excellent discussion. :P
