update from update-land

I'm halfway done with winter break, which means only three more weeks and I'll be back in business...and in busyness also.  But it's all good!  I really can't wait to see all my friends again, and do math again, and hang out in coffee shops and the science building...oh, my.  I'm also halfway done with all the Christmas presents I have to make, so soon I'll be done knitting myself out of house and home.  So far I've knitted a cabled scarf, a Fibonacci sequence striped hat, and for my roommate, a very loud hat.  I am working on a pair of fingerless gloves.  Then I have one more hat, and a uterus.  Yes, you read that right.  :P

In the realm of TV, I still can't wait for the Doctor Who Christmas Special.  In the meantime, I have been watching a lot of BSG, although I'm off that kick right now.  I'm now on season 3.  I've been watching NCIS with my dad, and I must say, the characters are growing on me.  Also, I just saw the episode of The Big Bang Theory where Amy Farrah Fowler discovers she is attracted to Penny's ex.  It was TOO CUTE!

I've read two books lately: Incompleteness, which is about the life and work of Kurt Godel (I don't know how to get the umlaut) and Grace, Fallen From, which is a short, lovely book of poems.

So that is that, of late.  What are you up to, dear flist?

THE KNIT UTERUS!!! I HAVE KNIT THAT UTERUS. WITH THE POSE-ABLE FALLOPIAN TUBES?

I love that thing. I gave it to a friend able to appropriately appreciate its awesomeness.

YES! That's the one! You just earned a thousand awesome points in my book. :D I have one already, and a friend heard about it and wanted one too, so it's now in my Christmas knitting queue.

Are you on Ravelry, perchance? Or did you find it on Knitty?

As did you :-)

I got it off Knitty way back. I'm a pretty sporadic knitter/knit blog reader, though.

a knit uterus. i must do this. maybe it will break me out of my knitting slump.

I've been freaking out about the xmas special and... that's it. my brain has NO ROOM for anything else

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually pretty easy and you can find the pattern on Ravelry. Good fun!

Only 10 more days till the special! So much excitement!

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha a little bit, yes. :D

Oh, man, it seems like everyone on my flist knits except for me! :) But hey, that Fibonacci sequence hat sounds awesome.

Ah, the Doctor Who special is so close! *waits on edge of seat*

you should learn! it's easy and fun. and you save a lot of money on hats/scarves. and you can make cool things like DEAD FISH HAT http://www.deadfishhat.com/

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, easy for you and other talented people, maybe! I tried a few years ago--I couldn't get the yarn to stay on the needles!

...I do own a fuzzy winter hat, though. Maybe not as awesome as dead fish hat (is anything as awesome as dead fish hat?!), but it has skulls and snowflakes and bobbles :D

use bamboo or beech needles instead of metal ones. it's much harder for the stitches to slip off because the wood grain catches them [/knitting geek]

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I did not even know they made different kinds! I think mine were metal, but I got rid of them :(

[personal profile] promethia_tenk 2010-12-17 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The wood does make a big difference, although it's also just one of those things where you have to resign yourself to its being frustrating and clumsy for a decent period before it clicks.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You should find someone to teach you the basics! Once you get started, it's easier to pick things up on your own.

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I should give it another go sometime, but I have a doomed feeling I'm just not cut-out for knitting! :)

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Take the easy way out-- crochet! That's what I do. :p So far I haven't moved beyond squares and rectangles, though.

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I've never tried crochet :)

Wrote a fun paper and submitted it for peer review and (hopefully) publication. I am excited about Doctor Who, and also am trying to get my hands on episode one of HBO's Penguins/Capitals 24-7 Road to the Winter Classic.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, paper! Do you work in academia?
eve11: (Default)

[personal profile] eve11 2010-12-16 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of. I work for an FFRDC that is part of a university. Part of my job description is "research" but it's more like a national lab kind of setting than an academic setting.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds really cool! What's your area of research?

[personal profile] eve11 2010-12-17 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Statistical modeling applied to network security :) Hence the botnets.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! That's really impressive. :)

[personal profile] eve11 2010-12-17 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! It can be a fun job sometimes but is sometimes frustrating too.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So are you a PhD scientist then?
eve11: (Default)

[personal profile] eve11 2010-12-17 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
ABD since forever. Will hopefully finish by the summer.

Thanks! Keep your fingers crossed for me :)

PS: I got your holiday card, yay! I don't know how reliable I would be at snail mail but I'm willing to give it a shot :) Hope things are going well for you and good luck with the start of next semester!

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I will!

Yay! I'm glad you got it. Thanks for the good wishes!

Oh, incidentally, do you use internet chat at all/any particular client?
eve11: (Default)

[personal profile] eve11 2010-12-17 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
just through gmail or facebook.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you like to be gmail or facebook friends?
eve11: (Default)

[personal profile] eve11 2010-12-17 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
sure, do you have a fb account? I looked and there are a lot of people with your same name... if you find me, my profile picture is currently me wearing a Rudolph-the-rednosed-reindeer headband (their noses light up)

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there are a lot of people with my name. If you modify the search for school and put in Knox College, that should do it. I can't seem to find you.

I couldn't find you with the filter you suggested... however, I updated my privacy settings so that anybody can search for me so try searching for me again?
