Harry Potter?

So I never read the Harry Potter books as a kid, but my college's library has them.  I checked out the first book.  Tell me why I'll love it, hate it, etc.!

They're funny, creative, exciting, very British-boarding-school (in a good way), magical, and Rowling writes an awfully good mystery story. :)

What the previous comment said! =D Also, there is a great variety of characters, most of them very likeable in one way or the other. And the series gets more mature as Harry and his friends grow up.

Loved, loved, LOVED the Harry Potter series. The first couple ones are written with the intended audience being younger children (hence the bigger fonts, shorter books, and simplier story lines... sorta). But as you move along, there will be vocabulary and story line concepts that you know was meant to mature with the intended child reading. I believe I read the last, longest book in about three days. You will be picking it up to read every waking moment (and the moments you should be sleeping) you have.

They're all just so damn charming. I can't think of another way to put it.

Ooh, British-boarding-school in a good way sounds promising. :)

Charming is good!

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think part of what I missed by not reading them when I was younger is growing up as Harry does.

Oh, dear, it sounds like it'll eat into my homework time, haha. Unfortunately, I think I spoiled the ending for myself a while back. :/

i haven't read those books for years, but when i did, i was unable to put them down. i would read them under the blanket by torchlight as a kid, all night.

I was just completely in love with the characters and it was so easy to get pulled into their world.

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I hope they hold up for adults as well! I'd love to get into a fantasy land. :)

Just to offer an alternative opinion, I mostly read the first one, but cared so little about what was happening I don't think I ever finished it (very rare for me to not finish a book) and certainly never read the rest of them. This may be because I started reading them as an adult, or because British boarding schools don't hold any particular sort of charm for me, but anyway.

The series is wonderfully imaginative, with great worldbuilding and quirky characters (in a good way).

The first and second books are more obviously written "for children" than the others are, but they're still very imaginative, and introduces the world and the characters. Books three and up grow more and more complex, with plots full of twists and turns.

Good to know. Thanks!

Cool--it's nice to hear from the other side as well.

Belated opinion, here.

I wasn't impressed with the first book because I felt Diana Wynne Jones did the "British magical schooling" thing much better. I cannot recall what made me decide to read the second book, but I started to like the series, and really liked the themes, and the way that the series "grew up" a little more with each successive book. The third and fourth books were the best, IMHO. The last three books were far too long, and slow, and unfocused. They really needed a good editor to tighten them up. The last book, I have a love-hate relationship with; there were some things I loved, and others I hated; some things that fit the themes of the series and you could see had been set up long ago, and others that came out of left field and didn't make sense at all.

I'm glad I read them as they came out, so that I could read them un-spoiled and get the full impact of the twists and turns of the overall plot.
